In 2012, Avesta Group took an essential part in the programming of the Maison Hermès in Shanghai.
Hermès has never been a company in a hurry. Throughout its 177 years of existence, first as a harness-maker, then as a purveyor of some of the most luxurious goods in the luxury goods firmament, its aversion to the production line has been assiduously maintained. Bags are still made one by one in its workshops throughout France and the quality of the world known Hermès scarf doesn’t need to be presented anymore.
Hermès, still majority owned by the Dumas family, already had 15 outlets in China. They started out 17 years ago hunkering down in hotels, then in spaces in malls. But a booming and exciting city like Shanghai had to host a Maison Hermès, the first one in China and only the 5th in the world.
Somewhat substantial obstacles derailed the Shanghai project – the complete renovation of a 1928 Art Deco building that had been a school and a police station before lying empty for several years (new-build is a lot more common here than conservation). However, the Shanghai Maison is a perfect place for a house looking to sell not just its wares, but its past and its present, its entire culture. Even the building happens to be in the shape of an H.
This Maison, conceived by architect Denis Montel, displays series of contiguous lounges with faintly blushing pink walls, sneaking over four floors containing tailor masterpieces, watchmakers, bag repairers, all exhibited as in an ethnographic museum. Indeed, on the top level, a space for exhibitions, alongside a café, has been designed.
