In 2013, Avesta Group was commissioned to elaborate a new museum concept and a five-year strategic plan to develop the Pushkin as a museum town.
For its 100th anniversary, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow launched an ambitious programme that involved completely rebuilding the current complex and adding numerous new galleries.
The implementation of this plan will increase the total area of the Museum complex to 100,000 sqm. It will be possible to increase the number of items on display several times over and to extend significantly the number of exhibitions organised. It will widen considerably the range of services offered by the Museum.
In 2014, Yuri Grigoryan from Meganom Project design firm was chosen for their architectural concept. One of the objectives of the project is to unify the Museum's various old and new buildings.
Each building will host a particular period in art but will retain its own identity. The outdoor will be used for public art and hold festivals and concerts in the spring and summer. During the autumn and winter months, such events will be held in an auditorium under the main building. A large hall adjoining the auditorium will host permanent exhibits and temporary exhibitions, as well as cafes, shops and areas to relax.
