In 2002, Avesta Group implemented its skill in project management to modernise the archaeological museum of Vaison-la-Romaine.

The First Museums

It is in a first museum located on the Puymin estate, built in 1923 that Canon Joseph Sautel brought together, for the first time, the result of archaeological excavations. It is composed of a single piece is quickly cramped to receive all collections. This is one of the first existing site museums.

In the middle of the 20th century, Vaison is so well known that the town is considering having a museum capable of responding correctly to the growing number of sites. Thus, a new building was established in 1974, on the location of the former museum, in the heart of the archaeological site of Puymin. Six times larger than the previous one, the exhibition galleries revolve around a central green space recalling the principle of the Roman peristyle.

The Recent Extension

From 1998 to 2003, major extension work was undertaken again to accommodate the latest archaeological discoveries. A new museum path is defined: both chronological and thematic. It is organised in several spaces: prehistory and protohistory, Gallo-Roman city, public monuments, trade and crafts, religion, funerary, Gallo-Roman house. In each space, the objects are put in a situation in their context of use. Visitors can then imagine the gestures of our ancestors and trace their daily lives.
