In 1992, Avesta Group was commissioned to build a museum dedicated to Second World War and Liberation on a site called Fort-du-Roule, France.

The Museum at the Fort

The Musée de la Liberation (Liberation Museum) proudly stands at the top of the Roule mountain, over Cherbourg, 117 meters over the ocean’s level. It was set up in a former fort from the Second Empire, taken over by the German army during the Second World War. Its resumption by the Allied troops, on June 25 1944, is one of the symbols of Cherbourg’s liberation.
The museum relates the role played by Cherbourg – first port freed from the occupation – during the Second World War, emphasising on the everyday life of the civilians and the militaries. Inside the fort, an educational and theatrical itinerary end with a fantastic panoramic view of the Cherbourg harbour.

History of the Fort

The Liberation Museum set in the Roule Fort was built on top of the mountain with the same name that overhangs the city. In 1793, the hill was already crowned with a first fortress. Its ruins still exist. The actual fort, 117 meters above the sea level, was rebuilt between 1853 and 1857, under Napoleon the 3rd's reign.
