In 1996, Avesta Group was involved in the creation of the opening exhibition of the new emblematic building for the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
The Bibliothèque Nationale de France (French National Library), so-called since 1994, is the national library of the French Republic. It is a public institution supervised by the Ministry of Culture and Communication. Its missions are to collect, preserve, enrich and make available the national documentary heritage, as stated in the decree of creation.
The Library's collections are unique in the world: 14 million books and printed documents, manuscripts, prints, photographs, maps and plans, scores, coins, medals, sound records, video and multimedia materials, scenery elements. It received as a legacy the royal collections gathered since the late Middle Ages. All disciplines, whether intellectual, artistic or scientific, are represented comprehensively. About 150,000 documents are added to the collections each year thanks to legal deposit, acquisitions and donations.
On July the 14th, 1988, the President of the Republic, François Mitterrand, announces “the construction of one of the biggest - if not the biggest - and most modern libraries worldwide… (that) shall cover all fields of knowledge, be available to all, use the most modern technologies of data transmission, offer remote consultation and work in collaboration with other European libraries.”
The site eventually selected for the construction is located near the Seine river, in the 13th district of Paris. On December the 20th, 1996, the Haut-de-Jardin level (Reference Library) of “François-Mitterrand Library” opens.
The opening exhibition called: Tous Les savoirs du monde (all the knowledge of the World inaugurated on the same day.
