In 2000, Avesta Group worked on the rehabilitation of a former tidal power station in La Rance, France.
The Tidal Power Station was inaugurated in 1966 by General De Gaulle, and it is the world's largest power station concerning installed capacity. Located at the estuary of La Rance River in France, the station produces energy with a lower cost when compared to the nuclear power generation.
The type of energy produced by La Rance plant is clean and sustainable, in a way that has minimum impact on the ecosystem life and species living in the estuary. The operator responsible for the station's weekly tasks and its consequences on the surroundings is the Électricité de France (EDF). The tidal power station produces about 45% of the whole energy produced in the region of Bretagne.
Since its reopening in July 2001, the facility receives more than 100,000 visitors per year. Discovering the station can also be done in a 300 sqm exhibition space, created to allow visitors to have almost real experience in the barrage, thanks to the use of videos, models and a window that offers a panoramic view inside an engine room.
