In 1998, Avesta Group worked on the development of the Nausicaá aquarium, which is today the largest aquarium in Europe.

A Dream Come True

Nausicaa is an original project that germinated in the minds of fans of the ocean in the early 1980s. The goal was to create a new kind of aquarium, a centre of the Sea, which would raise the general public attention to issues related to the ocean.
The place is neither a museum nor an aquarium. It's more; It's a cultural centre, a database of the Sea, a discovery centre for the marine environment, both entertaining, educational and scientifically focused on the relationship between man and sea.
There are 4.5 million litres of seawater, 40 aquariums and terrariums and approximately 36,000 marine species from around the world.

History of Construction

In 1981, Guy Lengagne, Mayor of Boulogne-sur-Mer, wants to renovate the building, redeveloping the old interiors. The following year, oceanographers Philippe Valette, current director of Nausicaa, Stephane Henard and Christophe Liacopoulos are commissioned to carry out a preliminary study and will then be responsible for the project. They are already convinced that it is necessary to create more than a simple aquarium.
Jacques Rougerie is selected as project architect.
Nausicaa is labelled "Major operation of architecture and urbanism" and the Sea Centre became the National European Centre of the Sea. This label awarded 12 million euros to fund the project amounting to 25 million euros.
Fish farming in the museum of the Grand Rue begun, to become a few years later, the high centre of scientific and technical discovery of the marine environment it is today.
